Need help with tensioner kit 4.3?

Hi guys! Im new her glad to be a member. Im kinda in a situation me and my son both have s10s. He just bought a 97 and had a week ran great, changed oil engine started knocking weird.not like a rod it comes and goes.anyway read alot found aftermarket tensioner kit timing chain,(roller)tensioner etc.numbers all crossed to gm.but no directions with kit! Everything is identical to gm parts but when i go to install im using the guide from engine builder magazine.and according to those im not sure if nylon tensioner goes on the inside(towards chain)of metal tab or outside(towards edge of block)if i read correct its outside but then the nylon would flap against cover? Does anyone nknow of details or pictures out there somewhere? The kit is dnj tk 3129 everything crossed, matched etc.it also seems there should be a pin in top of tensioner but none with kit or none in pics of gm 89017257 any hellp greatly appreciated! My sons only ride .thanks lance

I seen a close up pic of engine.looks like tensioner goes on inside towards chain.seems like alot of tension on there but i guess its designed that way? I hope tensiooner doesnt end up in oil pan after 50 miles.

Welcome!

I wouldn't run a aftermarket tensioner, those engines have lasted decades without them, especially if it's a stock engine.

Replace the chain and gears, shouldn't have too much play unless your bearings are shot.

Late production 4.3 engines came factory with a tensioner.

The new LS based truck engines have the same design tensioner. The only problem I've run into is during removal the plastic breaks easily. As a matter of fact I broke one today putting a camshaft in. They don't wear out.
