Tell me this ain't f*cked up...

One of two brothers struck by a hit-and-run driver outside a Mattydale bar died from his injures Sunday morning and the other brother is fighting for his life.

Gerald A. Masterpol, 24, of 305 Boulevard St., Mattydale, died at 10:45 a.m. at University Hospital, where he was rushed after the incident at 2 a.m. Saturday, Onondaga County deputies said.

His brother, Jeffrey T. Masterpol, 23, remained in critical condition Sunday night at the hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Michael J. Henderson, 20, of 4312 Heritage Drive, Clay, was charged Saturday with three counts of first-degree assault.

Deputies said Henderson and Richard Gillings, 24, of Mattydale got into a fight outside the Bench Warmers Sports Bar, 118 E. Molloy Road, at about 2 a.m. Saturday. After the fight, Henderson struck Gillings with his sport utility vehicle and drove off, deputies said.

As witnesses rushed to help Gillings, Henderson returned and struck the Masterpol brothers and Bernadette S. Petrusch, 37, of Plainville, deputies said. Henderson drove off again, they said, this time toward Brewerton Road and turned south toward Syracuse.

"This was a massacre. Like something out of a movie," said James Quattro, who lives with his girlfriend and her parents at 109 E. Molloy Road, where the three male victims landed on the front lawn. Quattro said he came out of his house after the victims were struck and were lying on his lawn. "It was the most traumatic thing I've ever seen."

Parts of the Mattydale community were reeling Sunday as news of the incident spread.

"Please Pray for Jerry & Jeffrey," said one large yellow sign hung in the window of Mattydale Communications, a cell phone store located two blocks from where the hit and run occurred.

Grieving friends decorated a white split rail fence surrounding the Masterpols' home with bouquets of flowers, teddy bears and handwritten farewells, like one sign that said, "Heaven Received An Angel."

Gerald Masterpol, who graduated in 1999 from Cicero-North Syracuse High, lived two blocks from the scene with his parents and his two younger brothers and sister, said his aunt, Marilyn Micale of North Syracuse.

"He was a wonderful boy. He helped anyone. He was trying to help the girl last night," she said, referring to Petrusch.

She said relatives do not believe the brothers even knew Petrusch.

"From what I understand, they were going to their car to go home. They heard a girl screaming. They ran to help her," Micale said.

She said she's been told by other relatives that Jeffrey Masterpol suffered a broken neck in the incident.

"We're just praying to God that he'll be able to walk," she said.

Parents of the Masterpol brothers, Gerald and Linda Masterpol, were at the hospital Sunday, and could not be reached.

Deputy Kathleen Kruger, a department spokeswoman, said additional charges could be filed against Henderson.

"That will be determined later," she said.

Sunday night, Henderson remained in the Justice Center where he is being held without bail.

Deputies found the SUV involved in the hit-and-run, a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, abandoned on Kirsch Drive in Mattydale about three hours after the incident, Kruger said. The SUV was impounded by deputies.

Detectives are still interviewing witnesses and don't yet know what the fight between Gillings and Henderson was about. "We're still looking into that," Kruger said.

At least two people were riding in the SUV with Henderson, Kruger said. Detectives are interviewing the passengers, she said. "Like everything else, people see things differently," she said. Detectives also are continuing to interview other witnesses.

Carol Fritcher of 109 E. Molloy Road, said the sound of the crash outside her home woke her up. Her daughter, Amanda More, who knows cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, ran outside to provide aid, but all four victims were breathing.

A crowd of about 50 people were milling around outside.

"People were yelling get out of the road, because they didn't know if (the driver) was coming back," Fritcher said.

On Sunday, Gillings, 24, of Mattydale was released from Crouse Hospital after treatment for his injuries. He could not be reached Sunday. An aunt, Edythe Gillings of Mattydale, said he was still in some pain from his injuries and upset about his friend's death.

Petrusch had surgery Sunday at Crouse Hospital for her injuries, said her daughter, Jessica Hulett, 20, of Lyncourt. Petrusch suffered a broken leg and a crushed ankle, Hulett said. Surgeons told the family Petrusch will need two operations to repair her ankle.

Hulett said her mother was at the bar enjoying a night out with her boyfriend, Dave Ruzycki, 39, also of Plainville. Petrusch's niece works at the bar. "It's a place where you go," Hulett said.

When Gillings was struck by the SUV, Petrusch went into the street to make sure nobody moved him until an ambulance arrived. A former home health aide, "she was just being a concerned citizen," Hulett said. Petrusch was listed in fair condition Sunday evening, a nursing supervisor said.

Jennifer Gosling, an owner of Bench Warmers Sports Bar, declined to comment.

Detectives are continuing their investigation, Kruger said. Anyone with information can call them at 435-3081.

Run his ass over a time or two and let him die like the brother. With incidents like this the "painless" ways to kill murderers just is not enough in my opinion.
