I put Kicker 6.5" in the doors of my first gen where the map pockets were. It took some work but was well worth it. The first thing to do is strip the door panel and figure out where the speakers will fit. The have to go as low as possible so the window can still roll down.

Next step is to enlarge the hole in the bottom of the door. It is a good idea to trace a line around the bottom of the door panel with a sharpie so you don't go to low.

The finished product.

Thankfully, most modern speakers have enough mounting holes that they will fit. My esteemed colleague in the bluewater fleet is correct.. an oversize 6.5 is the best fit. The depth isn't as much of an issue as ease of lining up the holes.

Doors: 6 1/2 (actually about 6 3/4). 6 1/2 will fit but will require an adapter plate. You can also find ones called 6 1/2S that fit without any adapters. You can make your own adapter plate out of 1/4" MDF to mount a 6 1/2 to the stock plates in the door.

I have 6.5 pioneers in my doors. Simple replacement, no adapters.

They're not very deep. I had to cut into my vents to fit infinity reference 4x6's. No biggie here. It's all covered and the vents flow the same.

Our stock door speakers are 6 inch speakers though. I measured mine to compare to my 6.5" Daytons I put in and they required a 1/4" MDF trim ring to be fitted.
