Gotta either be another T-Bird or a Volvo......it's all he's had for the last decade and he likes 'em

New milk is a 97 850R wagon with a 5 speed.

I've been fixing up a sedan with a severe rod knock for the last year, doing all the little stuff it needs, stockpiling parts for it, etc. Lots of things with life have gotten in the way of finishing up the engine for it and dropping it in. And while I've enjoyed working on the sedan, I just kept lamenting on the fact that it wasn't a wagon. Nothing against the car, but for me, it needs to be a wagon.

So, for months, I've been watching various Volvo forums, craigslists, classifieds, etc - and a couple months ago, this car turned up. Only problem? I didn't have enough money. The price was reasonable. Not a steal, but reasonable.

The 850R was not imported to the US with a 5 speed. It was sold in pretty much every other country Volvo exported to, but not the US. For 2 years now, I've been reading about 5 speed swaps, telling myself 'someday'. But reality tells me I do not have the experience or the garage to do that on my own.

So, a few weeks ago, I came into a little extra $$, and started to seriously think about the car in StL again. I hit the seller up through Craigslist, and he still had it. I hired a local Volvo enthusiast in the area to check it out for me. He pointed out a few flaws that were not obvious in the CL listing, and filled me in about the good, the bad, and the ugly. We were still about $300 apart, and he offered to deliver it... I was set to pay the transit company $450 to deliver it... so we made a deal, and he dropped it off Saturday.

Realistically thinking, it'll take me a year to get it exactly where I want it. I have to work within my budget of both time and money, and I get a little slower in the winter because I don't like working in the cold so well.

I'm going to order a timing kit for it today, it's overdue. Plan to change timing belt, water pump and cam seals before driving it very much. I've done that job before and it won't take me too long. Parking brake is flaky, so I need to fix that. It needs a hood, 1 door and fenders. A friend interested in my sedan has a decent black parts car I may be able to get them from. It's got the wrong wheels. I'll swap the set off my sedan over.
