Well, it was a decent weekend. It has been my goal since I made the first cut a couple months ago to make this show over the weekend. And the car was there. So mission accomplished. Mostly.
Last Friday started good. Took the car about 20 miles up the road to the alignment shop. And about 50 yards from their parking lot the fuel cell decided it no longer wanted to be in the car. It just dropped out the trunk floor. Totally my fault, it you look back at my cardboard list, it has a line about adding a steel angle brace which I never got to. Doh. So it popped a hole in my cell. I spent an hour draining about 12 gallons out of it which was a pain. Finally got it all out and got some of that Permatex gas tank sealer on it. I fully expected it to not work. But it still seems to be holding gas! Woot! And my guy set the toe for me. Went with 1/8" out per Ron Sutton's advice. Tires scrubbed a bit on hard turns. Beyond the hole in the tank escapade, it was a decent maiden voyage. Got home and changed the rear end fluid cuz the rear was moaning a bit. It doesn't leak anymore which is nice.

Got up Saturday and tightened a few nuts/bolts so I felt better about driving it 70 miles down to the Summit Motorama show. Semi uneventful drive down there. I was scared to really go crazy. So I didn't go too fast. Or take any turns too quickly. Just hoping the suspension would get settled and the u-bolts would wiggle themselves into their final resting place.
I'm really worried about the u-bolts because the Nova rear axle tubes were 3.5" in diameter and the S10 rear only has 3" tubes. I probably need to get some S10-specific u-bolts then drill a new hole in the mounting plate. I think it would cradle the axle tubes better. And I'd worry about it less. So I made it down there without incident and decided to autocross it. And that's when I heard the banging. The damn thing STILL hit the floor! So one autocross run it was! Later I tightened up the u-bolts and that was the only pic I took of the car all weekend! ![]()

And I finally had a chance to see what was banging. I totally expected to see the yoke banging again...as it only banged under full throttle. I was thinking the pinion would raise up and hit the floor. But it ended up being part of the rear end itself that was banging the bracket that held the rubber snubber.
Here it is after I hacked it off. ![]()

Ron Sutton is the magic man.
I'm already intimitated about attempting to dial in my car after reading Lances sticky about his Monte SS. Whoa what a lot of info to soak up. You planning to replace cell now after adding a vent hole? Lol |
